This book first came on my radar because of the cover. As you can see, it's completely different from anything I've seen (urban fantasy wise) and I was instantly intrigued (because, hello, it's awesome!). Then I read the blurb and became even more so. Jane is a selkie (or half one), which I found intriguing because that isn't the normal badass heroine you generally find in this genre.
So when I saw this in my crappy BX bookstore, I immediately snatched it up and ran home to sit and read straight through it. No joke. I was caught from the first page and Ms. Peeler never let me go. Her writing is witty and hilarious (similar to Molly Harper's Nice Girls Don't have Fangs and Nice Girls Don't Date Dead Men ). Jane is a great character. She's strong and yet so damaged from her past (and we all know how I feel about damaged characters).
But, honestly, my two favorite characters weren't "main" ones. As is usually the case with me, I instantly bonded with two random lesser characters - Anyan and Wally. Anyan is a Barghest and I may have something of a crush on him. I hear he's got a larger part in Ms. Peeler's next novel, Tracking the Tempest, and I'm nearly beside myself with joy. Wally is a djinn who has very large, ahem, pants. Jane's speculation over what else he kept in them (along with weapons and whatnot) had me laughing out loud.
Oh, right, the plot. There's someone killing half supernaturals (kind of like Jane) and Jane teams up with the delicious Ryu (he was really made for me when I "heard" his laugh. He sounds like a bit like a hyena) in order to track them down. Their search leads them directly into the heart of the supernatural community, where Jane's crash-course in her heritage takes a deadly turn.
So, basically, a fantastic book. I enjoyed myself immensely and I seriously cannot wait until the next one comes out. What's that, you say? I have to wait until JULY. Oh sad day. 9/10
